Can you give me a step-by-step explanation of how to ...

I get asked this a lot. How to play a video, how to set up DNS, how to install a codec, how to fix your email program, and so on. I can't give a step-by-step explanation, and here's why.

The problem is, you maybe think that all computers work the same way. And they don't. First, there's the Macintosh. I know zero about Macintoshes. Secondly, if you're using a PC, there's the issue of which operating system. There's major difference between the different versions of Windows (3.1, 95a, 95b, 98a, 98b, NT 3.51, NT4, 2000). Maybe you didn't even know that there's more than one version of Windows 95 and 98? There is, and the difference between them can be important.

Then there's the question of what's installed on your computer. Which browser are you using, which version of the browser, which ISP are you using (they have different DNSes, for a start). How have you got your browser set? Have you enabled the self-censoring feature? If I tell you to remove something, will your printer stop working? If you change your IP address, your network might stop working.

So, I can give some ideas about how to proceed to solve a problem. Sometimes I can work out what is wrong, but to do that, I need extreme cooperation from you. This means, I ask you to try things (which might not make sense) and you have to try *exactly* what I ask, and then tell me *exactly* what the computer says. It turns out, that very few people are capable of doing that, I don't know why. Computer experts are the worst. I tell them "Do X" and they do Y instead, then they tell me "It said error something". Yes. Well.

You might think that whatever problem you have, must be at my end. And, of course, sometimes that's true. For example, a link might not work, because I spelled a word wrong. I can fix that sort of thing easily. But sometimes, the problem isn't at my end; I can't fix it. If it's at your end, I need to help you fix it. Notice how I put that. I can't fix it, all I can do is help you to fix it. And I will help you, even if you should be getting your help from your ISP, or from Microsoft, because you're a Member of my web site, and I help Members.

But I can't give you a step-by-step explanation of how to ...

If you want to know what it feels like, try writing down for me, the *exact* steps that I need to take to make myself a cup of coffee. Remember to tell me where the milk is, where the coffee is kept, how to open the kettle, what to do if there isn't any coffee in the jar, and all the other little probems that you solve without thought because you know your home environment.
