The Proxy method for dealing with a corrupted cache at an ISP

I'm assuming that you're using Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer version 4

  • In IE version 4, go to View ... Internet Otions
  • Go to Connection
  • Check the "Proxy Server" box
  • Click on "Advanced"
  • Next to HTTP, put (under address) webcache.bt.net (under port) 8080
  • Click on OK, then on OK, and you're all set.

    In IE version 5

  • Go to Tools ... Internet options
  • Go to Connections
  • Click "Lan settings"
  • Check the "Proxy Server" box
  • Put (under address) webcache.bt.net (under port) 8080
  • Click on OK, then on OK, and you're all set.

    In IE version 6

  • Go to Tools ... Internet options
  • Go to Connections
  • Click "Lan settings"
  • Check the "Proxy Server" box
  • Put (under address) webcache.bt.net (under port) 8080
  • Click on OK, then on OK, and you're all set.

    Browsing is now happening via the webcache.bt.net server. If that is slow, then browsing will be slow. It probably will be slow. It might be very very slow.

    When the problem clears (it usually takes some days, you'll want to stop surfing via the proxy. To do that, go through the same procedure, but UNCHECK the proxy server box.

    Here's some other addresses you can use instead of webcache.bt.net, with the city they serve given in brackets at the right (you don't put that city into Internet Explorer).
