December 15, 2001 The game featured great execution and tough defense from both teams.
Even though it was played in Arizona, the 40-degree temps provided genuine "football weather"
beneath the palm trees at the North High School football complex.
After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, the San Diego Sunfire jumped out
on top 2-0 on a safety set up by a muffed punt which left the Caliente deep in its own
territory. On the ensuing free kick, the Sunfire marched right down the field to score
a touchdown and pushed the score to 10-0 with the two-point conversion.
With all the momentum going their way, the Sunfire appeared as if it was going to put the
game away for sure. But the Caliente would not go away silently. About midway through
the third quarter, they realized that they had an untapped resource named Tiffany Latta
in the backfield. The 5-5, 135 lb speedster began breaking off-tackle runs for very nice
gains and began to wear down the defense by making them chase her all over the field.
Time and time again, however, the Caliente drives would stall due to an offensive miscue.
Poor punting kept them from being able to really win the field position battle. Eventually,
though, they broke through to get the score to 10-6 on a sweep by Latta.
The conversion failed, but the Caliente were back in the game.
Twice in the fourth, the Sunfire pushed deep into Caliente territory, only to be picked
off and then turned away on downs. With about 8 minutes to go in the game, San Diego
faced a difficult third-and-long situation at midfield.
It seemed as though the Caliente would get the ball back in excellent field position,
but as the Sunfire QB rolled out, she reversed field and hit a streaking receiver for a
long gain all the way down to the Caliente 15-yard line. Arizona corner Rachel Ann Zamora
was badly shaken up on the play and the game was halted for about 30 minutes, while paramedics
tended to her. She was taken from the field on a stretcher, but had sensation in all
extremities, so we trust she'll be okay.
Once play resumed, San Diego seemed poised to go in for the clinching score, but a goal-line
interception provided new life for the Caliente. After reaching midfield by sticking
primarily with the run, the drive came to a halt on an interception. Fortunately, the
defense held tough again and the teams traded possessions.
With about 4 minutes to go, the Caliente failed on a 4th-down play and the Sunfire
had a chance to run the clock out. After converting another 3rd down, they only needed
to run a few more plays, as the Caliente were out of timeouts. But a critical error
in play selection would prove costly - instead of keeping the ball on the ground to
keep the clock rolling, the San Diego QB attempted a pass that missed its mark,
stopping the clock. Forced to punt on 4th down, the Sunfire hoped its defense would be
able to keep the Caliente out of the endzone.
With time running down, the march began. With 15 seconds to go, Corbett hit the
six-footer in the back of the endzone for the game winner.
It marked Arizona's first victory in three tries against their arch-nemesis.
